The exquisite Jacaranda Room of Harare’s 5-star Rainbow Towers Hotel has again been selected for one of the country’s most prestigious occasions – the 2011 national Sports Awards to be held tomorrow night (Thursday, December 15). It’s a glittering gala event for 500 people.

Zimbabwe’s Olympic Gold Medallist and former world record holder, Kirsty Coventry, is expected to top the billing and former Sportsman of the Year and world combat pistol shooting champion, Dave Westerhout, is guest of honour.

The Jacaranda Room is perfect for such a showcase event as it is the largest pillar-less ballroom in the country. It’s a majestic facility with glittering chandeliers, varnished teakwood panels and shiny wooden floors.

Kirsty Coventry, who is now preparing in Monaco for the 2012 London Olympics, is the only individual Olympic medallist Zimbabwe has ever produced, following the women’s hockey team’s Gold at Moscow in 1980. Last week she was nominated among the 21 candidates vying for election to the International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission.

She will be a hot favourite for the prestigious Zimbabwe Sportswoman of the Year award tomorrow as she also recently contributed four of Zimbabwe’s six Gold Medals at the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique. Fellow swimmer Nicole Horn and golfer Claire Minter are also finalists. Athletes Stephen Muzhingi and Takanyi Garanganga are Sportsman of the Year finalists with chess master Robert Gwaze.
